Boots and Fulton Foods both set to leave Rotherham town centre

BOOTS and Jack Fulton are to close their Rotherham stores — dealing another double blow to Rotherham town centre.

The health chain confirmed the shop in Howard Street will shut its doors in June.

A spokesperson said: “At Boots, we aim to serve our patients however and wherever they need us, both in stores and online.

“We continually review our store and pharmacy network to ensure that we balance our commitment to offer provision where it is most needed with our need to adapt to a changing market environment.

“Following a recent review, we can confirm that our store on Howard Street, Rotherham will close in June 2022.

“Our nearby store in Parkgate Shopping will continue to offer pharmacy and retail services to our customers.”

The spokesperson said staff were aware of the closure and would be offered alternative roles where possible.

Meanwhile, Fultons branches are being converted to Poundland stores following their acquisition on October 2020.

Eleven conversions have taken place in the past year — but the firm said it saw no potential in doing the same in Rotherham.

A spokesman added: “Sadly, we see no prospect of being able to convert it to a Poundland format in the near-term or that it will be able to continue to trade profitably as a standalone Fultons store.

“That’s why we shared with colleagues that it will sadly close in the next few months.

“They have our commitment we will do all we can to find them opportunities to transfer to a Poundland store or other openings elsewhere in our business.”

The decisions follow recent announcements or closures by Poundland, Costa and Wilko amid the general retail decline in the town centre.
