Blue badge users warned of changes

BLUE badge users in the Dearne and Don Valley are being warned that the scheme will change from January 1.

The national scheme is for people with severe mobility problems and allows blue badge holders to park close to where they need to go.

The aim of the new format is to modernise the system, tackle blue badge fraud and make the scheme fairer.

It has been developed by the Government in consultation with disabled people, local authorities and other stakeholders.

From January 1 the following changes will be made:

  • Blue badges will be made and issued centrally for the whole country but assessing who qualifies for a badge will still be done locally.
  • Customers will be able to apply for a blue badge online on the direct.gov website.
  • Blue badges will have improved security features.
  • Blue badges will be registered on a national database.

Doncaster’s Cabinet member for adults and health Cllr Patricia Schofield, said: “The blue badge scheme is vital for many people.

“In Doncaster we are committed to ensuring these types of parking spaces are available for people who genuinely need them and I hope these changes to the scheme will help to ensure this process is even more secure and fair.”
