Achievement award puts Glynis’s school on the “Sunnyside”

The Community Education Awards are an annual celebration of schools’ efforts to help children and young people become responsible community members. 

Affiliated to The Police Community Clubs of Great Britain, the awards reward school projects and teachers who help improve the lives of pupils and their local communities. 

This year’s awards attracted more than 3,500 entrants, triple the number of nominations from its inaugural year in 2011. 

Glynis Ashton, pastoral and inclusion mentor at Bramley Sunnyside Junior School, won the outstanding personal social health education (PHSE)/citizenship teacher award. 

Head-teacher, Helen Headleand, entered Glynis into the awards for her exemplary efforts in operating an open door policy for students requiring support in many different areas of school life. 

The whole school turned out to see Glynis receive the award along with members of her family.

Ben Atherton, from the Community Education Awards presented Glynis with the accolade.

Ben said: “Mrs Ashton shed a tear of gratitude to rapturous applause, and gave a short impromptu thank you speech. 

“I was truly grateful to have been granted the opportunity to present this award, as I have learned that Mrs Ashton’s work is not only ongoing but expanding to find new ways of supporting year six pupils as they progress to high school.”
