A Levels: Record year for Wickersley

WICKERSLEY School’s A Level students were record-breakers twice over.

Not only did the school see more students than ever before doing A Levels — a total of 226, up from 205 last year — more than ever got As and A*s, with 22 per cent of passes at the top two levels.

The school’s best-performing students were Oliver Brown (three A*s, one A), William Oxley (three A*s), Lauren Carr (two A*s, one C), Jack Mathewman (two A*s, one A and one B), Daniel Roe (two A*s, one A, one D), Liam Taft (two A*s, and one A), Oliver Blake (four As), Amy Booth (four As), Kopisha Kumar (four As), Olivia Whiting (four As), Matthew Jones (one A*, three As, one B), Thomas Worrall (one A* and three As).

Oliver Brown (18), of Marcliffe Close, studied maths with further maths, chemistry and physics.

He is heading to Oxford University to study engineering for four years.

Oliver said: “I’m extremely pleased to get my offer from Oxford.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work and hours of revision over the last few months.”

He added: “I’m doing a general engineering degree, so I hope to work out what I want to specialise in over the next four years.”

Lauren Carr (18), of East Bawtry Road, studied fine arts, dance and theatre.

She will head to Phil Winston’s Theatreworks College in Blackpool for three years of dance and theatre studies.

Lauren said: “I’m very excited. I’ve wanted to do this ever since I started dancing, when I was three.

“There’s nothing else I’m so passionate about, so I decided to do what I love.”

She added: “My dream is going into West End shows or touring shows. I don’t really have a favourite style — I like it all.

“It’s hard work and a tough industry to go into, but I’m well prepared for that.

“My teachers have been very helpful. They’re very supportive and have given me lots of opportunities.”

William Oxley (18), of St John’s Court in Sunnyside, studied maths with further maths and physics.

He will attend Sheffield University to study maths in September.

William said: “I’m very pleased with my grades — I didn’t think I would do as well as I have.

“I would like to work in the maths field, but I’m not yet sure exactly what I want to do.”

Head of sixth form Helen Alderson said: “We’re really proud of our students and this morning has been brilliant.

“A lot of our students have got their first place at university and most now have their places.

“The others have offers — they are just deciding which ones to accept.”

Asked how the school had maintained its performance, she added: “I think it’s a combination of our high expectations and students who work really hard.”
