50 jobs in jeopardy at Rotherham waste treatment firm

ROTHERHAM waste treatment company Sterecycle has gone into administration.

TROUBLED Rotherham recycling firm Sterecycle has gone into administration, putting 50 jobs at risk.

The Templeborough-based firm, which processes black bag waste, called in Guy Hollander and Mike Wellard from accountancy firm Mazars to manage the firm while a buyer is sought.

Mr Hollander said that the firm could keep running for up to five weeks during this process with the support of its clients, but if any failed to back the recycling plant Sterecycle may have to shut down.

It comes a month after Sterecycle, which has almost doubled capacity in the past year, put in place an odour management programme after the Environment Agency had expressed concern about the amount of time its officers had to spend dealing with odour issues at the plant.

The plant also hit the headlines back in January 2011 after dad of three Michael Whinfrey died and workmate Peter Davis was seriously injured in an explosion at the site.

Chief executive Tom Shields told the Advertiser last month that capacity had doubled from a year ago but this week admitted that the autoclave specialist firm had called in administrators following a “significant” downturn in trading results.

“It is with great sadness that the board has reluctantly decided to call in an administrator having explored all practical options to continue trading with the company in its present form,” he said.

“I would thank all those who have supported the company through this difficult time.”
