Council rent increase agreed

COUNCIL tenants’ rent will go up by 6.57 per cent — an average of £4.54 a week under plans approved this week.

It follows an increase of 6.19 per cent last year, 9.45 per cent the previous year and 8.7 per cent in 2011.

The recommendation was approved at Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.

Rotherham Borough Council’s finance manager Mark Scarrott said Rotherham rents still ranked as some of the lowest in the country.

He added: “The Government wants council rents to be comparable to other social landlord rates by next year.”
