Young actors sought for summer festival

A THEATRE troupe is seeking talented youngsters to act out a classic tale in a tent.

Open Minds Theatre Company want 50 aspiring actors aged between eight  and 18 for a performance of George Orwell’s Animal Farm.

The novel follows farm animals who stage a coup against their keepers — an allegory for the pitfalls of communism, adapted for the stage by OMTC associate director Alice Bartlett.

“We have a very capable and versatile group of young people representing the youth of Rotherham,” said Alice.

“This is a really exciting opportunity for us to develop and showcase the skills of our ensemble of young actors, by putting on a great performance for  the public.”

The show will take place in June, in a purpose-built, 600-seat theatre tent in Clifton Park — a highlight of Rotherham Shakespeare Festival 2017.

It will be directed by professional actor Peter Williamson, who has led the senior youth theatre group since September.

He said: “Animal Farm is a fantastic story for us to tell. At its heart, it’s a fairy tale.

“But, for the older members, it also explores political corruption and revolution. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our young actors.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting more of the talented young people in the area who will complete our cast.”

OMTC Youth Theatre offers a chance to develop acting skills alongside professionals, make friends and perform in front of an audience.
