Woods will be alive with sound of brass bands

EX-MINERS will be blowing their own trumpets—and horns, cornets and tubas—this weekend when they head to the site of a former pit for a day-long brass band competition.

Among those showing off their musical talents at Kiveton Community Wood on Sunday will be 69-year-old former Kiveton pitman Malcolm Taylor, who will play his tuba alongside his bandmates in the Thurcroft Welfare Brass Band.

The strains of brass band music will echo throughout the 132-acre wood—the site of the former Kiveton Colliery—as Thurcroft’s music marvels lock horns with bands from Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, intent on claiming the crown for their county.

The second annual Kiveton Park Brass Band Festival is being hosted by the Forestry Commission, which took over the Kiveton site after the pit closed in 1994 and transformed it with a green makeover, planting 37,000 tress and creating another 50 acres of ponds and grassland, along with four kilometres of trackways.

This year’s event is aimed at finding undiscovered talent and up-and-coming brass bands.

Last year's winner was Hucknall and Linby Brass Band from Nottinghamshire.

Challenging them this year alongside Thurcroft Welfare Brass Band will be musicians from  Ireland Colliery, Chesterfield, Oughtibridge in Sheffield, Deepcar in Sheffield, Thurlston, near Barnsley, Crofton in Wakefield, Dronfield in Sheffield and Clifton and Lightcliffe in Brighouse.
