Wildflower scheme hailed a success

COUNCIL gardeners will be working through the night to help sow the seeds of next spring’s blooming revival after their wildflower project was hailed a success.

From next Monday (November 11), the borough council’s Streetpride teams will start to cut the remains of wildflowers that have brightened up the central reservation of the dual carriageway that runs from Hellaby through to the town centre.

The teams will work alongside the A631 and A630 — East Bawtry Road and Centenary Way — cutting back the flowers which have been left alone well into the autumn to drop as many seeds as possible and propagate the areas for next year.

Cllr Gerald Smith, the council’s Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This has been a hugely popular idea that has been really well-received by the public.

“We have received around 285 compliments from residents and visitors to Rotherham and a great deal of interest from other local authorities who are considering whether to carry out similar schemes in their own areas.”
