ANOTHER BLOOMING RECORD: The 11th annual open garden day on August 8 at the Doncaster Road home of Anne and Stuart Grindle raised over £3,300, more than double the total last year, which will be divided between three causes. Visitors totalling a record of around 650 toured the Grindle’s immaculate garden and saw the luxurious lawn and tried their luck on the tombola. The Isabella Reynolds Fund, Tickhill Parish Church and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice will each receive £1,100. A collection for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice collected £84. Stuart said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day. Our recent appearance on BBC television’s Gardeners World on which I talked about how to create and manage a fine lawn boosted the attendance considerably. Following the programme we received telephone calls from gardeners across the country, some of who made special trips to see us at our open garden. There were people there from far and wide including Dover, Wiltshire, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Harrogate, Cleethorpes, Hull, Scarbrough, Skegness, Barnsley, Wakefield, Pontefract and Derbyshire. It was another wonderful occasion and we are very grateful to all of the town business people and individuals who so generously donated prizes for our tombola. Many thanks also to all of the people who supported us and to all of the many folk who helped out on the day. We are already looking forward to next year’s 12th annual open garden, which will be a week earlier than this year. The day after the event we were delighted to welcome a local couple that had married in St Mary’s Parish Church. They arrived here in a vintage Rolls Royce and they had their wedding photographs taken in the garden by our professional photographer neighbour Jill Temporal.”

SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY: Townsfolk have an opportunity to serve their community by becoming a volunteer councillor on Tickhill Town Council. Following the death of Cllr Ray Hill on July 3, clerk to the council Margaret Cannings-Clough advised residents that if by August 7 ten electors of the parish of Tickhill made a request to the DMBC returning officer Johanna Miller for an election to fill the vacancy an election would be held. Ten electors did not write in and as a result the vacancy on the council will be filled by co-option after citizens of the town have written in to Tickhill Town Council to express their interest in serving as a councillor. The council’s eight serving councillors will elect the most suitable candidate. Anyone interested in becoming a councillor on Tickhill Town Council should contact Mrs Cannings-Clough at 24 Vine Road, Tickhill DN11 9EP.

The free launch party saw live music in a marquee and gave music fans a chance to purchase tickets for the festival on September 26. www.t-fest.co.uk.

UNION TEA PARTY: The ladies of the Tickhill branch of the Mothers’ Union took part in their annual tea party on August 11 at The Barn, Castlegate home of union member Helen Curtis and her husband Trevor. A raffle raised money for the Mothers’ Union Big Wheel Appeal.
