SMELL CONTINUES: Villagers in Misson and the surrounding area including Bawtry are angry that Bassetlaw District Council (BDC), which is responsible for the area in which the Tunnel Tech North Ltd mushroom compost factory at Misson is situated, continues to allow nauseating odours to be given off from the factory. Misson Parish Council’s Tunnel Tech Complaints Committee has sent a strongly worded rebuke to David Armiger who is head of regeneration and neighbourhoods at BDC complaining of the council’s complacency and lack of action to enforce odour limits set down in the company’s permit to operate. Steve Botcherby, chairman of the committee set up to tackle the long-running issue, sent the email when it was learned that the latest measures to tackle the odour would take two years to implement. This information comes after BDC allowed Tunnel Tech to avoid implementing measures that would have seen the factory fully closed in 2007 and after a prosecution of Tunnel Tech for breaching the terms of its permit which saw the company pay fines totalling more than £60,000 took almost two years to be heard in court. Mr Armiger, who presided over two controversial planning decisions in 2007 and 2008 which allowed Tunnel Tech to expand its output and which was criticised by an external investigation following complaints by residents, has refused to say what measures are being taken by the company and has threatened to cease all correspondence with the Complaints Committee. This comes despite previous assurances from officers at BDC that the community would be kept fully informed. 

MEMORIAL UNVEILED: Creator of Rotherham’s new war memorial, Stephen Davis, attended the unveiling of the monument on September 16. Stephen and his team from Bawtry memorial masons S P Davis of Church Street won the contract to construct the monument that bears the names of the 1,124 Rotherham men and women who lost their lives in World War Two. The memorial is made from imported Indian grey granite blocks with silver letters on black granite inserts.
