WHAT'S ON: Bawtry

SUPPORT BRA: Bawtry Residents Association (BRA) is on the lookout for members to support the steering committee. BRA was established in the town four years ago and has attracted 80 members. It works to promote Bawtry to the local and wider community, encouraging people to support local businesses. The chair of BRA is Rebecca Dickinson and she and her colleagues have organised a programme of events throughout the year. These will include a British Heart Foundation fundraising Wear It To Beat It event this month, the annual Bawtry Fashion Week in March, the celebration of the arrival in Bawtry of the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race in April, the annual Visit Bawtry horse racing meeting at Doncaster Town Moor in May, the Visit Bawtry Polo Cup at Misson’s Vale of York ground in July and the annual Christmas Lights switch-on in December.

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT: A Bawtry businessman has complained to Bawtry Town Council about the cordoning off of part of the town’s public car park on Market Hill to allow the annual Christmas Eve carol service to be held. The complainant pointed out that the reduction in the size of the car park takes place on one of the busiest days of the year for business folk and the action means that one third of the car park is unavailable. In its reply Bawtry Town Council expressed regret that businesses had been inconvenienced by the community event but the service is for the benefit of all Bawtry residents and businesses and the well-attended event lasts for only a short period in the late afternoon of Christmas Eve.

PINFOLD PLAQUE: A new stone plaque has been installed at the town’s Pinfold which commemorates Queen Elizabeth II becoming the longest reigning monarch in British history. The Pinfold is situated on the corner of Doncaster Road and Station Road. This is the third stone plaque that Bawtry Town Council has funded, commissioned and installed at the location. The first plaque commemorated the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen and was followed in 2014 by a plaque to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

BOX OFFICE OPEN: The box office where tickets for Bawtry Amateur Dramatic Society’s (BADS) latest show can be obtained is open for business. The musical Oliver is on stage at the Phoenix Theatre March 5-12 7.30pm. Tickets £8 and £10 can be obtained in person from Bawtry Motor Company proprietor David Kellett at 43 Market Hill.

WRITER TALKS: Local author AE Staniforth is guest speaker at Bawtry Community Library on February 18. He will talk about his latest work Lady Celina. Tickets £1 from library volunteers or 01302 710858.

HIGH TECH HALL: Bawtry Town Council is keen to see the installation of Wi-Fi broadband and Loop provision at Bawtry New Hall. The council has written to the New Hall Management Committee advising members that the town council will fund the provision of the facility and pay for its future maintenance at the Peakes Croft venue.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: Bawtry’s Royal Air Force 2008 Squadron Air Cadets are anticipating the 60th anniversary of the squadron this year. The event at their Green Park HQ will coincide with the 75th anniversary of Air Cadet Corps. www.2008aircadets.co.uk.
