Walks get Rotherham College students on the move toward better health

SPORTS centre staff held a day of activities to promote the benefits of walking.

The #WalkRotherham team from Places for People Leisure, who manage four sports centres in Rotherham, led walks for Rotherham College students as part of National Mental Health Awareness Week.

Rochelle Scott, contracts health and wellbeing manager for Places for People Leisure, said: “It was a brilliant opportunity for our team to raise awareness of the benefits of walking at a time of year when exams are taking places and students are more likely to need support around mental health, especially when it is found that a single walk can release endorphins which improves mood and reduces stress.

“Walking is a sociable activity that can help reduce not only stress but several mental health related feelings such as social isolation, depression and anxiety.”

The #WalkRotherham programme offers free walking challenges and support to all local residents, along with offering free walking packages to schools and workplaces.
