Villagers gear up for festival fun

Woodsetts is presenting its tenth annual Midsummer Festival on Saturday and  Sunday, while Brinsworth will hold its first summer fair alongside the annual car boot sale tomorrow.

Activities and stalls on offer at Woodsetts Recreation Ground will include archery, birds of prey, hog roast, pony rides, face painting, South Yorkshire Fire Service and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

The festival starts in earnest at 10am and a parade with the theme “Midsummer Night’s Dream” will be led from the Butcher’s Arms at 11am by the Frumpentarn Guggen Band, while entertainment throughout the weekend will include local bands and DJ Rowan Connell.

There will be a flypast by the RAF and youngsters from the village will contest the final of Woodsetts Got Talent.

As part of the celebrations, 100 special “eco lanterns” will be sold tomorrow and released into the sky at 9pm.

Sunday’s activities include a fun run, music from Thurcroft Brass Band and a junior six-a-side tournament.

Michael Bradburn, one of the event’s organisers, said: “This will be our tenth anniversary festival and we hope that it will be the same huge success as in  previous years. “

Visitors to Brinsworth Comprehensive School on Saturday can look forward to a range of activities, including a climbing wall, bungee run, bouncy castle and a football penalty shootout game. 

Police and fire officers will be present, as well as members of the village’s local history group, while live music will be provided by local bands and students from the school choir.

Year 7 students will be taking part in a cricket tournament and The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Rose McNeely, will be on hand to present the winning team with their medals. 

The fun starts at 10am and goes on until 3pm.
