Village prepares for annual summer fair

ONE of Rotherham's most historic villages will come alive this weekend for a day of old-fashioned fun for all the family.

Letwell Street Fayre — which has been staged annually for more than 60 years — kicks off at 1pm on Saturday.

Thurcroft Brass Band will be playing for much of the afternoon with a visiting pipe band parading up and down the village street, too.

Visitors can have a flutter on the snail racing, which is something of a local tradition, and there’s a children's fancy dress competition with cash prizes on offer as well a gift for every contestant, and extra points for children wearing home made costumes.

Maypole dancing, pot smashing, rat splatting, and a coconut shy are all part of the programme.

Displays of vintage military vehicles and exhibition bus from the South Yorkshire Transport Museum will add a touch of heritage, and members of the WI will be serving home made teas in the village hall.

Visitors are being urged to follow the signs to the free car park.

All the proceeds from the fair go to support the upkeep of the village’s 14th-century St Peter’s Church.
