University College Rotherham students' charity gig for Neurocare

All funds from the Heads Together event at The Ryecroft Club in Rawmarsh on April 19 will go to Neurocare — which raises money for the neurosciences and neurology departments at Sheffield hospitals.

UNIVERSITY music students are working in harmony to curate a fundraiser featuring blues, rock and acoustic acts.

The charity was chosen by level 4 BA popular music performance and production students at University Centre Rotherham because it is a cause close to one learner’s heart.

Kayley (19, pictured), of Whiston, explained: “In May 2018, I lost my dad Dale (40) after he suffered multiple strokes and bleeding on the brain.

“He was cared for in the neuro-intensive care unit at the Royal Hallamshire hospital in Sheffield

“Throughout his stay, Neurocare and the staff at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital provided truly the best possible care and were so sympathetic and sensitive to the needs of my family during this incredibly difficult time.

“Nothing was too much for them and everything both my dad and family required was handled with respect and kindness, along with a friendly and warm attitude.

“Because of the outstanding work Neurocare do for neuro wards in Sheffield and for the care they gave to my dad and many other patients, I suggested to my peers that they be the chosen charity for our fundraising event.

“Everyone involved has supported my situation and made this event something I will remember forever.

“Doing this for my dad has been a really comforting way to sit back and remember our time fondly — talking about him with family just reminds me of how special he truly was and how much this charity really means to so many people like myself.”

The show, starting at 7.30pm, will have mix of musical genres, from classic rock to an acoustic performance from student Katie Greaves, and includes sets from student bands as well as blues band Black Toad, with music curriculum team leader Andi Rae playing guitar.

Rob Bellis, lecturer and skills assessor at UCR, added: “The main learning outcome of this project is to plan a live event like you would in the real working world, which involves marketing, logistics and planning, managing finance and even creating contracts to manage the bands.

“Of course, as tutors we’re here to support the students but this is their chance to stand on their own two feet and create something that they’re proud of.”

Tickets for Heads Together are priced £4.50 and available from Rotherham College on  01709 722749 or on the door.
