Supermoon over Rotherham Minster

ROTHERHAM Minster is given a beautiful backdrop in this atmospheric shot captured by a talented reader.

Super snapper Kevin Dolby took this photo of the “supermoon” in the night sky from Bassingthorpe Lane in Munsbrough last Tuesday.

Kevin, of Maltby, said he had used an app called Photo Ephemeris, which shows you the date, time and in which direction the full moon will rise and then selected Bassingthorpe Lane as an elevated point with a clear view of the Minster.

“Thankfully the sky was cloudless,” he said.

“It was 10.30pm when the moon peeped above the horizon.

“It was a stunning sight.

“At first the moon was rich red in colour and as it moved further above the horizon and closer to the minster, it became brighter and changed hue to a more orange colour.”

Kevin said he shot the photo with a standard DSLR camera and telephoto lens on a tripod which he described as “nothing special — all quite old tech now”.

The supermoon occurs when the moon is full at the same time as its orbit is at its closest point to earth.
