Sheffield festival to showcase Africa this weekend

INTERNATIONAL artists will visit Sheffield this weekend for a brand new festival celebrating African cultures.

The SoAfrica Festival will feature world-renowned poet Akala and musician Seun Kuti — son of afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.

The continent’s contemporary and traditional music, theatre, poetry and fashion will all be showcased at the Crucible Theatre on October 26 and 27.

Performers include Sheffield’s own KOG and the Zongo Brigade plus Egypt 80, Iroko Theatre, Oduduwa Talking Drummers, Aar Maanta, Breis and Nambula.

Most events are free to attend — including free drumming, writing, dance and storytelling workshops.

The SoAfrica Marketplace will be selling the latest in African-inspired fashion, accessories, books and homewares.

And South Yorkshire artists will be showcasing their work, learning from each other and attending creative lectures.
