Rotherham arts group promises "explosion" of activity

Rotherham Open Arts Festival promises to be an explosion of activity—starting on Sunday.

Rotherham Open Arts Festival promises to be an explosion of activity—starting on Sunday (24).

The build up for this year’s festival in November begins with internationally renowned 'Retina Dance' holding a five hour contemporary dance workshop at City Limits Dance Centre, Sheffield.

Sunday’s class has been designed to suit all abilities and took place from 2pm to 7pm and more information can be found at www.rotherhamculture.org.

Rotherham Culture Company director Claire Saddington said: “When I studied dance in London my practical classes were taught by a member of Retina, it was the most exciting and enjoyable dance style I’ve ever performed and I’m delighted they’re teaching and performing as part of ROAF 2011.”

Rotherham Culture Company and Open Minds Company are joining forces to develop a “Rotherham Fringe” this November to promote existing local events that regularly take place in the borough and to encourage and support new events.

Their programme of activity is dance focussed including an August workshop with Phoenix Dance on August 20 at City Limits Dance Centre, and an evening dance residential in November with Retina Dance.

There will be open auditions to be awarded a place on the residential, these will take place at the Rotherham Show in September.

Organisers say it will be an exciting opportunity to work with professional dance pioneers to develop their latest project “Layers of Skin” and perform with the company at Magna.
