Race for Life students sung on their way by talent show star Lucy Milburn

A SINGER from a TV talent show joined pupils and staff for a race to remember two victims of cancer.

St Pius X Catholic High School in Wath held its Race for Life last Thursday to remember former staff member Marie Beevers and ex-pupil Curtis Allen.

Lucy Milburn, semi-finalist from TV’s The Voice, sang the pupils and staff on their way.

She sang You’ll Never Walk Alone in tribute to Liverpool United super supporter Curtis, who was honoured by the Premier League club at a match last year.

Almost all of the school’s 630 pupils took part, as well as around 60 staff.

Last year’s Race for Life at the school raised more than £6,000 and organisers are hoping for another bumper total for Cancer Research UK.

Curtis was a student at St Pius from 2011 to 2016 but was diagnosed with leukemia in August 2016 and died on October 1 last year.

Ms Beevers, who died in  February 2017, was a departmental support assistant at the school who ran Macmillan coffee mornings and regularly took part in the Race for Life.

Members of Curtis’ and Marie’s families attended the event and presented Race for Life medals to the students and staff at the finish.

Head teacher Miss Sue Smith said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in our Race for Life event last Thursday.

“It was brilliant to see so many staff in their Race for Life T-shirts, taking part with the students, who were also fabulous.

“It was a great example of the St Pius team at work together.

“Hopefully we’ll raise a lot of money again for Cancer Research UK, a cause which is very close to all our hearts.”
