Poppy display at Dearne beauty spot

HANDMADE poppies created by school children and volunteers will form a colourful display for remembrance at a newly-created Dearne Valley beauty spot.

Goldthorpe resident Catherine Slingsby got in touch with Barnsley Council-led Dearne Area team to help with her project making poppies from recycled plastic bottles.

The initiative has blossomed into a collection of more than 200 poppies, which will be planted at the  Goldthorpe Cutting nature reserve next week.

Jenny Yates, of the Dearne Area Team, said: “This excellent idea to re-use plastic bottles for another purpose has resulted in beautiful handmade poppies which will create a vibrant commemorative display.”

A Poppy Launch event is being held from 3pm next Saturday, October 30.

The event is open to all and will include performances of wartime songs.

Catherine said: “I am so proud that my idea to display poppies to remember the human and animal sacrifice in war has resulted in this fantastic project.
