VISITORS to Grimm & Co had a rare chance to glimpse the far side of the “secret door” as the literacy charity celebrated its first official birthday.

The apothecary to the magical at the bottom of Doncaster Gate was launched on February 29 four years ago, so trustees and supporters have had to enjoy “unbirthdays” every year and not been able to mark its official anniversary — until last weekend

They organised a “through the secret door” sessions in the storytelling centre, also known as The Writers’ Pad.

Activities included games of Twists and Tales and Stems of a Story, both of which were created by young people at Grimm & Co, creative writing activities  — including magical menus and creating the personality of a leap year — tasters of frogspawn and a dragon egg-crafting station.

Artist Chris Bilton, meanwhile, was on hand to draw portraits of passers-by.
