My World: World Book Day sounds like a laugh...

Schools around the country allowed pupils and staff to dress as their favourite character for the event yesterday (Thursday, March 5) which threw up some interesting dynamics in the classroom.

Imagine, instead of the normal 30 children sat in their uniforms learning about Shakespeare, there was 30 different characters – from Harry Potter to The Gruffalo - sat in a class with Elsa from Frozen teaching them. It must have looked like some drug fuelled hallucination!

But it is a worthwhile project. Anything that gets children reading more and broadening their horizons can only serve as a positive in years to come.

Then of course, there was the story that hit the national press of the young lad sent for a day’s learning dressed as Christian Grey – the protagonist of the hit raunchy trilogy, 50 Shades of Grey. (See today’s Advertiser for the Rotherham version, 50 Shades of Graves.).

Young Liam Scholes from Manchester was forced to change his character from the 50 Shades star to James Bond; teachers were obviously clutching at straws as to what other literary characters wears a suit and tie!

The 11-year-old arrived at school with props from the book, including a face mask and hand ties and teachers decided to draw the line there.

Personally, I think that Liam showed a great sense of humour and a little tongue in cheek swipe at his classmates, who were innocently dressed as their favourite characters.

The fact that he was forced to change to James Bond itself raises interesting questions. I guess a sexually promiscuous serial killer is a much more reasonable character to assume for the day!

If I was at school today and had the opportunity to dress up, I would like to think I too would have gone for something slightly ‘risqué’ like Liam, anything to get a giggle from the other pupils.
