Mountaineers take centre stage at fund-raising event

ORGANISERS of a fundraiser are hoping that their event brings in a mountain of cash.

The event will bring in cash to support the victims of this year’s earthquakes in Nepal through Rotherham-based charity PHASE Worldwide.

A Mountain To Climb will feature well-known mountaineers and adventurers talking about their exploits.

Confirmed speakers include: mountaineer Andy Cave; Rosie Swale Pope, a global adventurer who is the only person to have undertaken an epic solo unsupported run around the world; Richard Parks, the first person to climb the highest mountain on each of the world’s seven continents and stand on all the poles within seven months; and Adele Pennington, the only British woman to have climbed Mount Everest twice.

Ian Parnell, one of Britain’s leading alpinists who has been nominated four times for the Piolet D’Or mountaineering honour, will also be speaking.

The event will be compered by English mountaineer Alan Hinkes, from Northallerton, who is the only Briton to have climbed all 14 mountains taller than 8,000 metres.

The event, organised by PHASE Worldwide and sponsored by Jagged Globe and Go Outdoors, will take place at Sheffield University Student Union Auditorium, Western Bank, on October 8 from 7pm to 10pm.

All the proceeds will go to PHASE Worldwide and Sherpa Aid UK, which looks after sherpas and their families who are ill, hurt or in need of help.

Sarah Galvin, director of PHASE Worldwide, said: “We are really excited about this event and are very fortunate to have secured so many world-class speakers.

“This will be a truly inspirational and unforgettable evening and will raise much needed funds for remote communities in Nepal.”
