Mexborough and Swinton reach for the skies

THERE is a busy August ahead for members of a local astronomical society.

Members of Mexborough and Swinton Astronomical Society have a number of lectures by experts, a solar observing event and public outreach initiatives planned.

Society meetings – all in the meeting room at Swinton Bottom Club on Station Road, Swinton – will feature a talk on Herschel 3 on August 6, a talk by Paul D’Silva called Astro Clinic on August 13, Steven Paul-Davis’s talk on Gamma Ray Bursts on August 20 and Autumn Sky with Andrew Kirton-Vaughan on August 27. 

All meetings start at 7.45pm.

The society will be hosting a community access solar observing event on August 2 at the JA Jones Hoober Observatory on Lea Brook Lane, Wentworth, from 2pm to 5pm and

on August 12 a community access event to view the Perseid meteor shower will take place at the observatory from 10pm to midnight.

On August 16 from 10am to 3pm people will have the chance to view the sun with society members at the RSPB’s Old Moor nature reserve in Manvers, Wath.
