Meet our wedding competition winners

THEY met while walking the beat, but Kate Mangles and Dave Ward are now preparing to walk down the aisle as the winners of our £5,000 Win a Wedding Competition.

Our own answer to Kate and Wills, who both work as Police Community Support Officers, were thrilled to receive the call telling them they had been selected at random to scoop the fairytale wedding package at the four star Hellaby Hall Hotel.

Ironically, the couple, who live at Hellaby, were just minutes away from putting a deposit down on a wedding at the 17th century manor house when they got the call to say they had won.

“We couldn’t believe it, we’d just presumed we’d not won,” said Kate. “We’d already been to look around the venue and loved it so much that we were on our way to put down a deposit.

“We just feel so lucky to have been selected and now it all seems very real.”

Kate (21) and Dave (32) of Bateman Road got together just over a year ago while working as Police Community Support Officers in Sheffield.

Six months later, Dave surprised Kate by spelling out “marry me” on a pizza, to which she said yes straight way.

The couple had begun a search for their dream venue and could not believe it when Kate’s mum spied the competition in the Rotherham Advertiser.

Now, the lucky winners are preparing to meet with the team at Hellaby Hall Hotel to discuss dates.

And Kate is looking forward to dress shopping and planning the rest of the big day.

“I certainly won’t be having anything like My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding,” she said.

“I’ll watch the Royal Wedding but I don’t think I’ll be taking any ideas from it.

“I’d like a dress with a fitted corset and skirt that flows at the bottom. I can’t wait to start looking now.”

The prize includes a three-course wedding breakfast, disco and DJ, red carpet arrival and dedicated wedding planner. We have also teamed up with It’s Bliss of Mexborough to offer a wedding gown worth £500 and Classic and Contemporary Cakes of

Doncaster are providing a wedding cake of their choice worth £300.

Dave said that the prize would make a big difference to their start to married life.

“I was relieved when we won because of the amount of money it means we will save,” he said.

“We were looking at saving to get married some time next year, but this way we can marry sooner and spend more money on the honeymoon.

“The venue is only five minutes from our house which is fantastic.

“We’ll probably have a civil service but we’ve not really thought about any of the other details yet.”
