ROTHERHAM folk will be making a splash as a state of the art leisure centre comes to the town.

The complex, which is part of a £35 million overhaul of leisure facilities in the borough, boasts a 25m competition swimming pool with moveable floor, diving pool, also with a moveable floor, six court sports hall, a 50-station gym, dance studio and coffee bar.

There will be an extensive range of activities from swimming courses to children's holiday clubs, gymnastics and trampolining lessons.

It will also become the new home for Rotherham Metro Swimming Club and Maltby Diving Club.

Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Shaukat Ali said the people of Maltby should be proud of the new facility: “Something like this gives the area and Rotherham a positive reflection to people who are not from here”, he said.

Maltby Leisure Centre is one of four new facilities within the borough which have been designed and built by DC Leisure.

Peter Kirkham, development director at DC Leisure said: “The project started in June 2007 and it has come a long way since then.

“I think it has surpassed everyone's expectations, it will definitely be an example to all other local authorities across the UK at just what can be done.

“The people of Rotherham will appreciate this hugely.”

Alongside health and fitness, the new Leisure Centre will connect to a service centre, which features a doctor's surgery, dental practice, pharmacy and council offices.

Cllr Ian St John said it was a step in the right direction for the people of the town: “We as a society are not as fit as we should be.

“I hope this new leisure facility will bring the people of Maltby together and make the town fitter as well.

“Maltby and Rotherham now has something to be proud of.”
