ARCHAEOLOGIST Alex Sotheran is the special guest for a history group’s next open meeting.
The experienced excavator will address Mexborough Heritage Society on The Battle of Bullecourt in 1917.
Since 2003, Alex has worked on battlefields in France and Belgium excavating First World War remains.
His work has been featured in several TV programmes, including Finding the Fallen, Digging for Britain and 'Digging up Britain's Past.
Alex’s talk will focus on the recent excavations at Bullecourt in France, where Mark II tanks attacked German positions supporting Australian troops.
Society secretary Bill Lawrence said: “The site was excavated and revealed some surprising and clear evidence for the tank attack which overturned the previous commentary about the battle.
“The project was also staffed by volunteers made-up of ex-forces veterans suffering from physical and psychological injuries.
“Their voluntary work helped their recovery through the 'Operation Nightingale programme of archaeological works.”
Admission to the talk at Mexborough Athletic Club from 7.30pm on December 1 is £1.250 for members and £2.50 for non-members.
