High hopes for Thurcroft Brass Band's new CD

A BRASS band is releasing a CD after being inspired by the UK Top 40 chart success of the Dinnington Colliery Band.

Thurcroft Welfare Band, has just recorded a 20 track CD, hope to follow the revival of brass bands in the area.

The 100-year-old band received funding from the Rotherham Arts Council for the recording of the CD which, will be launched at an open day on Saturday in the band room at Thurcroft.

A £26,000 grant from Rotherham Borough Council's Quids In funding scheme has also boosted the band and helped to buy new instruments.

Before playing the tenor horn at Thurcroft, band secretary Julie Piper used to play for the Dinnington Colliery Band, who recently featured in the BBC1 programme A Band For Britain and secured a £1 million record deal as a result.

Julie, who plays the tenor horn in the 30-strong band, said that she was optimistic that the Thurcroft band could enjoy its own chart succes.

The band, who recorded their debut CD in one day at Thurcroft Church in mid-March, have topped the league in the Yorkshire and Humberside Brass Band Association and came third in a contest at Butlins last year.
