Get creative with an outdoor wedding reception

MARTHA Reeves would have us believe that “Summer’s here and the time is right for dancing in the street.”

But according to Steve Dolder, owner of specialist wedding music booking website I Do Music co.uk dancing in the marquee is way more fun.

Marquees are a great way to have a spacious and airy wedding reception, allowing guests some fresh air without having to brave the elements should the great British Weather take a turn for the worst.

Steve Dolder said: “Summer weddings are a blast for the couple, their guests and even the band.

“A marquee on the lawn of a hotel, stately home or specialist wedding venue allows guests to take a breath of air, sit on the grass or go for a wander.

“But most important, a marquee allows you flexibility and the capability to create exactly the sort of space you want for entertaining your guests and for dancing.”

Steve said that in a marquee, stage sizes can vary to meet the needs of the band, whereas in an indoor venue you are usually stuck with the facilities provided in the room you have booked.

He added: “Bands and wedding acts love a marquee because it allows them to produce a nicer, more controlled sound to the sound absorbing properties of the materials used to construct the marquee.

“An outdoor summertime event also suggests its own play list to add to your favourites.

“You could try a California theme featuring numbers from the many famous American west coast bands, or maybe open things up with a Salsa band?

“An Ibiza theme allows you to play almost any dance hit that has had the island rocking for twenty years or more, so there will be a favourite summed dance tune for everybody.”

If you really want to push the boat out, you could go for a summer festival theme with four bands, a sax player and a DJ to produce a line up of songs that will create your own mini Glastonbury.

If your budget will not stretch to four bands, book a single band with a good play list and a DJ to accompany them, that way you get live action from the band and the opportunity to pick your play list from the hundreds of songs in the DJ’s play list.
