IT was a case of mud, sweat and tears at Rother Valley Country Park as thousands of women joined together with one mission in mind - to conquer cancer.

Nearly 5,000 women united in total to tackle Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life 5k Pretty Muddy course last Saturday or take on the 5k and 10k races the following day.

Daughters, aunties, mums and grandmothers raced together and took on the Pretty Muddy obstacle course which involved wading through murky waters, climbing the high ropes or sliding into a mud bath.

The charity said it hoped the 4,800 who took part over the weekend will hit a fundraising target of £154,000.

Emma Colbourne, Race for Life event manager for Rother Valley, said: “I want to say a heartfelt thanks to everyone who took part in Race for Life, and their supporters, as well as our heroic volunteers.

“It was a fantastic day, full of emotion, courage, tears and laughter.

“Cancer Research UK doesn’t receive any government funding for its ground-breaking research, so every contribution matters.

“Many people don’t realise that their entry fee only covers the cost of the event.

“It’s the sponsorship money that really makes a difference.

“So, whatever the amount, we’re asking everyone to make every effort to return their sponsorship money as soon as possible.”
