Fun in the sun as village gala returns

Battle was joined at the board games stall during Conisbrough Gala on Saturday, with young hopefuls trying out their skills against the veterans.

There was equally fierce competition to be found at the dog show, while singer Helen Evans and SV Dance Studios provided musical entertainment.

Families also flocked to enjoy the fairground rides, craft workshops and home-made gifts stalls as the gala made a welcome comeback after a year off due to the pandemic.

The village’s next major event is a heritage-themed day of activities and entertainment next Saturday, August 21.

Conisbrough Castle is hosting a fighting knights demonstration, axe-throwing and archery taster sessions, a mini town crier competition, a military parade and grenade practice.

St Peter’s Church is the place for fun fair rides and stalls, music from the Second World War from Dinnington Colliery Band, choral singing and a recreation of a Viking burial.

There will also be the chance to take part in a “murder mystery” trail, which aims to bring to life some of the murkier goings-on and chilling characters of Conisbrough’s past.

Organised by the It’s Our Heritage group, who have put together displays of local history in the library for the occasion, the event will run from 11am to 4pm and most activities are free, including entry to Conisbrough Castle on the day.
