From the decks to the driving seat for radio DJ Toby Foster

The BBC Radio Sheffield presenter, who lives in Rotherham, has unveiled the vehicle which he will drive in a car rally from Sheffield to Monte Carlo.

The Bangers and Cash rally is the UK’s first “art on tour” banger rally and will see 21 cars, driven by teams from South Yorkshire battling it out to reach Monaco first.

All of the cars feature artwork, and the radio team — including Toby’s breakfast show colleagues Dan Green and Amy Nagy — will be travelling in a car with a bonnet decoration designed by listener Katie Woods for a Radio Sheffield competition and painted by artist Laura Gray.

The car is a white Mercedes S80, was named El Presidente by its previous owner.

Toby said: “I think it will be a miracle if we actually get to Monte Carlo in El Presidente, but at least we're going to look good as our bonnet design is absolutely fantastic.

“I can’t wait for the rally to start — me, Dan and Amy are going to have a blast and we’ll enjoy sharing our adventure with our listeners.”

NHS worker Katie said: “I am so excited to see the car for the first time and it looks fantastic! I'm really pleased that Laura has managed to capture my style. 

“I wish Toby and the team the best of luck in the rally.”

Also taking part are two workmates from Rotherham construction company Horbury Group, whose car bonnet — painted by artist Ann-Marie Byrne — pays tribute to landmark Sheffield buildings and Monaco’s own architectural highlights.

Chief executive Trevor Wragg, who is taking part in the challenge alongside chief financial officer Gavin Leverett said: “It is such a striking piece of artwork, so bright and colourful, which represents the journey that we will be taking.  

“We’re really excited to be taking part in this challenge and it is fantastic to be doing it to help such a great cause.”

The pair (pictured below) are racing in an 18 year old Jaguar, similar to one that Trevor owned in the early days of his career. 

The teans will set out from Sheffield on Friday, September 21, following their breakfast show live from the start line. 

They will take it in turns to drive the 1,219 miles to Monte Carlo which they expect will take four days. 

The route will take them through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland and Italy before finishing in Monaco on Monday, September 24. 

The Bangers and Cash rally is organised by the charity Roundabout, a Children in Need funded charity, that raises money to help end youth homelessness.  

After the rally, the bonnets will return to Sheffield where they will be auctioned.
