The star-studded film — which started life as a Sheffield Theatres-backed musical — launches in selected cinemas and on Amazon Prime Video worldwide on Friday (17).

Produced and directed by Sheffield’s Warp Films, the film was shot around the region in the summer of 2019 — including at Swinton Academy.

The coming-of-age musical stars Richard E. Grant, Sarah Lancashire, Sharon Horgan and Shobna Gulati.

The real-life story of Jamie has been adapted from a 2011 BBC Three documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.

Sixteen-year-old schoolboy Jamie has his heart set on becoming a drag queen and attending his school prom in a dress.

His story captured the public’s heart and the attention of popstar Dan Gillespie-Sells and screenwriter Tom MacRae, who adapted his story for the stage.

Sheffield Theatres originally commissioned and staged the musical that the film is based on in 2017 — and since then it has gone on to become a huge West End hit.

In recognition of the central role Sheffield has played in the film, a premiere will be held at the Crucible on Friday, where there will be a red carpet welcome with the stars of the show.

Sheffield City Council has teamed up with Warp Films and Prime Video to showcase a free display of film props and costumes in the Winter Gardens from September 17 to 25.

You can watch Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema on Friday.
