Film of women’s role in miners’ strike

A FILM made by young people looking at the role of women during the miner’s strike will be launched next week.

The Women’s Front project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Young Roots Fund, was set up by the Rotherham Integrated Youth Service.

The resulting film, entitled The Women’s Front, will be launched at 6pm on Tuesday (March 17) at Rotherham Town Hall.

A Rotherham Borough Council spokeswoman said the project’s aim was to raise the aspirations of young people by researching and documenting the changing role of women during the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike.

Over the last year, the group of 30 young people, aged 13 to 19, from the Maltby, Dinnington, Thurcroft and Aston areas have been interviewing women involved in the strike.

They have developed skills such as team working, editing, filming and interviewing and have also been involved in workshops and trips to learn about the mining industry to expand their knowledge.

The young people have volunteered around 150 hours of their own time to the project.
