YOUR LIONS NEED YOU: Tickhill and District Lions Club is on the look out for men and women who would like to get involved in raising money to help to support people in need. The club numbers 34 local ladies and gentlemen of diverse backgrounds and of all ages who all want to help to make a difference by helping people and community groups across the local area. Potential new members are needed from Bawtry, Bircotes, Harworth and Rossington. FOLLOW MIKE: Mike Farka leads members of Tickhill and District Footpath Group on the weekly walk on Sunday, February 23. The party meets at the Buttercross at 1.30pm before striding out over the fields to the former Anglo-Romano settlement of Stancil.

ROAD WITH NO NAME: As a result of a local resident attending a meeting of Tickhill Town Council (TTC) and raising the matter of a road in Tickhill that has no name and has never been registered with DMBC, TTC has been making enquiries. Public opinion suggests that it is called Barber Lane and TTC is to try and confirm why some residents know it by this name. TTC discussed the matter at their meeting and agreed for a road naming application to go to DMBC for the currently unnamed lane off Dadsley Road once all the appropriate information has been received.

HYMN AGAIN: John Marsden BEM who is the organist and choirmaster at St Mary’s Parish Church tells members of Tickhill Methodist Ladies’ Fellowship about the stories behind some well-known hymns at their meeting on Tuesday, February 25. Tickhill resident John begins his musical interlude in the lounge at the Northgate chapel at 2.30pm.  

BEETLING ABOUT: A Beetle Drive and Pie and Pea Supper organised by Sue Green that is being held in the Parish Room on Tuesday, February 25 at 6.30pm will raise money for St Mary’s Parish Church Tower Fund Appeal. Tickets for the Shrove Tuesday event are now on sale priced at £5 and can be purchased from the Castlegate Cards shop.

PUBLIC WELCOME: Members of the public are invited to attend the latest meeting of Tickhill Town Council on Tuesday, February 25. A ten-minute question and answer session gets the meeting underway in the Tithes Lane pavilion at 7pm.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES: The annual Ashing Service is being held in St Luke’s Chapel at St Mary’s Parish Church on Wednesday, February 26 at 10am. Churchgoers of all denominations gather in Tickhill Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 26. The Ash Wednesday Holy Communion Service starts at 6.45pm in the Northgate chapel.  

KNITTING AGAIN: The members of the Mother Teresa Knitting Group cast on once again on Wednesday, February 26. The team continue to make warm blankets and clothing to the needy at home and abroad at the session that starts in the Tickhill Christian Fellowship Church, 25a, Sunderland Street at 10am. New knitters and donations of double knitting wool are most welcome. Knitters can if they wish knit in their own home and send along their completed work.

FLOWER CLUB: Lesley Burton from Goltho Gardens at Market Rasen talks about Creating Goltho at the meeting of Tickhill Flower Club on Wednesday, February 26. The doors open in the Parish Room at 7pm prior to the start of Lesley’s lecture at 7.30pm.

FAMILY HISTORY: A new Family History course starts in Tickhill Community Library on Wednesday, February 26 when students will be able to find out who they think they are. The six-week course in the Henry Shaw building, Castlegate runs from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Those attending are invited to come along and meet the tutor from Adult Family and Community Learning and find out more about researching their family history. There is free access to Ancestry and Find My Past websites. The six-week course costs £36. Places are limited and must be pre-booked by contacting TCL on 01302 742871.   

HELPING THE HOMELESS: A total of £220 was raised at the annual Christingle Service that was held in St Mary’s Parish Church. The money from the event organised once again by Judy Harrison will be sent to the Children’s Society that helps homeless young people and the families.

COFFEE MORNING: It is Coffee Morning time at Tickhill Community Library once again on Wednesday, February 26. Tea, coffee and cake will be served from 10.30am to 12.30pm and the money that is raised will help to run the Castlegate volunteer led community facility.

KEW TALK: David Matthewman from Northallerton tells Tickhill Horticultural Society about Kew Through The Seasons at their meeting on Thursday, February 27. The meeting in the Northgate Methodist Church Schoolroom starts at 7.15pm. Visitors will be made most welcome.

PILGRIM WOMAN: Sculptor Rachel Carter is the guest speaker at a special event that takes place in Tickhill Community Library (TCL) on Thursday, February 27 from 2pm to 4pm. Rachel completed an epic voyage aboard a cargo ship across the Atlantic Ocean reviving the crossing made by the Pilgrim Fathers aboard the former cargo ship Mayflower 400 years ago in 1620. She will lead a talk tracing her ancestry and her art commission inspired by this years Mayflower 400 commemoration. A limited number of tickets are now available from TCL priced at £5.

COMMUNITY SINGING: Rehearsals are taking place on Friday nights at 7pm during February for the annual singing of Olivet to Calvary at Easter time. Members of St Mary’s Parish Church choir and friends will be raising their voices once again at the event on Good Friday, April 10. The practice sessions organised by St Mary’s choirmaster and organist John Marsden BEM are being held at the Tickhill Christian Fellowship Church at 25a, Sunderland Street.

GIFTS FOR CHILDREN: There was once again an excellent response from townsfolk who donated presents for children and young people at the annual Gift Service that was organised by St Mary’s Parish Church. The Salvation Army and Families First distributed the gifts to the needy.  

TALK OF TITUS: Guest speaker Alan Pugh will tell the retired gentlemen of Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club all about Titus Salt of Saltaire, West Yorkshire at their meeting on Thursday, February 13. The gathering in Tickhill Cricket pavilion, Alderson Drive starts at 10am with Alan stepping up to the lectern at 10.30am. MAKING MONEY: Sunderland Street resident John Marsden BEM has been busy once again at his Sunderland Street home making and bottling his delicious Seville orange marmalade. The jars are available from John who is accepting monetary donations that will benefit St Mary’s Parish Church Tower Fund Appeal.

NO AWARDS: Tickhill Town Council has agreed not to hold what would have been its seventh annual Community Awards ceremony this year. Councillors will consider staging the event next year. The awards that were first initiated in 2013 recognise the outstanding contribution made by people of all ages to their community.  

SNOWDROP SPECTACULAR: Once again townsfolk have been able to enjoy the spectacular annual display of snowdrops that can be seen on the grass bank adjacent to the moat near to the gatehouse at historic Tickhill Castle that lies close to the much-visited Mill Dam.
