DISTRICT NEWS: Kimberworth

ST. THOMAS' CHURCH: The rescheduled Tommy's Tots toddler group was originally planned to take place on the playing field behind Kilnhurst Community Centre last week but, because of the weather, it was decided to run it at the church where it was drier! The service this Sunday was held from 10-11.15am and is still available to join in from home via Livestream, Facebook and YouTube.

ROTHERHAM IN BLOOM: Residents are being encouraged to enter their garden into the Rotherham in Bloom Garden Competition before it's too late. The competition is open to both council and non-council tenants and has a number of categories, including best garden, best young gardener (aged up to 18), best pots, planters and hanging baskets, best vegetable patch and best wildlife or sustainable garden. Entries close on Sunday August 7 so be quick and enter your garden now. See Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council's website for more details and how to enter.

COMMUNITY GROUP FUNDING: Kilnhurst has a number of voluntary community groups and these groups are being urged to apply to the Community Leadership Fund. This is a small budget that each ward councillor receives to spend in their ward; this fund is open to community groups and organisations that deliver activities in their local area. To be considered for the fund, any project or activity must be delivered by a group or organisation for the benefit of local people and support the delivery of the ward's priorities. GRAVESTONE BLESSING: The gravestone of Isaac Thackray, recently found by a young Kilnhurst resident in his back garden while digging out a vegetable patch, has now been fixed to a grave plot in the churchyard of St. Margaret's Church in Swinton. Harley, the young boy who found the stone, and his family, along with local councillors and a variety of other people who helped in the relocation of the gravestone, attended a short service of blessing held in the churchyard.

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH: After residents expressed their concerns about speeding in Kilnhurst, a community speed watch was held on Hooton Road. Cllr Stuart Sansome joined the local PCSO's who carried out a survey of 80 vehicles; none of the vehicles surveyed exceeded the speed limit.

PUBLIC INFORMATION EVENT: Kilnhurst Resource Centre/recreation ground will be hosting a public information event on August 8 from 1-4pm. A variety of organisations will be there, including the local police team, Kilnhurst and Swinton East Ward Councillors, Rotherfed and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. David Ferguson, FCRM advisor from the Partnerships & Strategic Overview, Flood & Coastal Risk Management, along with Peter Henchley from the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council drainage team, will also be in attendance. Local residents are encouraged to come along and ask any questions or raise any concerns they may have, and free family activities will also be taking place including a Dinky Farm and refreshments.
