Dakota flyover for Wath schools' World War II day

Staff and students at St Pius Catholic High School in Wath are preparing for their own Evacuation Day next Wednesday when they will be joined by junior schools from across the area.

The aim is to re-create the atmosphere of the Home Front during the Second World War and residents who lived through the war have been invited to talk to the children about their experiences.

Among the guests will be a former Lancaster bomber pilot and a WAF who had to cook meals for up to 200 people each day.

The centrepiece of the day will be a flypast by the Dakota of the Battle of Britain Flight at 12 noon when the children will line the school fields in the shape of the numbers 1940.

A spokesman for the school said: “We are keen to invite any local members of the Royal British Legion so they can share in the excitement and the fun.

“It should be a great day for all and we are really looking forward to it.”
