Civil War victim recalled at Wentworth

WENTWORTH will be ringing to the sound of battle this weekend as historical re-enactors gather to honour of a local victim of the Civil War.

Members of the Sealed Knot Society from all over the country will be returning to Old Holy Trinity Church, Wentworth, to remember Thomas Wentworth, the Earl of Strafford.

  A leading Royalist, he was executed by order of Parliament on 12th May 1641 when Charles 1st sacrificed him to try to avoid the looming Civil War.

On both Sunday and Monday  visitors will be able to visit a living history encampment and watch as soldiers learn to drill and fire their weapons.

The event is free, although donations towards the latest phase of conservation at the church are welcome.

The church is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, the national charity which cares for historic churches at risk.

The event runs from 10-4 each day with guided tours of the church and Fitzwilliam Crypt available throughout the day.
