Care home teams channel Olympic spirit

Broadacres, Swallownest, Silverwood, West Melton Lodge and Whiston Hall took part in 12 weekly sessions from Rotherham United Community Sports Trust.

These workshops included “chairobics”, board games, skittles, boccia, target throw and dominoes.

A day of finals was held at New York Stadium, where the team of ten residents from West Melton were crowned winners.

Swallownest also received a trophy for best homemade supporters’ flag.

RUCST health and wellbeing officer Emma Schofield said: “Every participant received a certificate for attending and there prizes like including best dancer and best dressed.

“The feedback from staff and residents was fantastic. The residents had great fun, enjoyed getting out and meeting new people and loved taking part in some competition.

“All the homes who took part are eager to take part again. We have 18 homes wanting to get involved.”

West Melton Lodge manager Bev Sawyer said: “All of our residents enjoyed the training and the day. Most of them already want to sign up and do it all over again.”

Carrie Davies, Silverwood manager, added: “The day was well organised and the afternoon tea and tea dance were brilliant.”
