Canal walk festival set to cause a ripple in Rotherham

THE country’s biggest canal walking event will dip into Rotherham in September.

There are 53 guided walks — mostly free of charge — and they range from a children’s trek of two miles up to the full 46-mile distance of the Chesterfield Canal.

Several walks will investigate the section yet to be restored and reveal plans of what will happen there in the future.

Chesterfield Canal Trust walks officer David Blackburn said: “The canal is an absolute delight at any time of year, but early autumn possibly sees it at its best.

“There are walks for all ages and abilities, including specialist interest walks and combined walks and boat trips for people who would like a more relaxing day out.”

It takes place from September 14 to 22 and there are special interest walks covering nature, history, architecture, bird-spotting and geocaching plus boat trips.
