Callum needs the Wizard of Schnozz!

YOUNG actor Callum West is off to see the wizard, hoping he grants him one wish—to mend his broken nose.

Disaster struck when the 16-year-old suffered the injury in a trampolining mishap two weeks before playing the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz.

But Callum will still be following the Yellow Brick Road—with help from his sister Hannah (14) and other members of Maltby Minors Youth Theatre.

Callum, a veteran performer in the experimental youth group, will still do the voice and singing of the Scarecrow, while Hannah will take over some of the more physical aspects of the role.

Callum, who hit his nose with his knee trampolining at a friend’s house, said: “I just hope it doesn’t affect my voice and I’m able to still be part of the performance.”

Maltby Minors are bringing their own unique approach to the oft told story, which opens a week on Monday.

Director Claire Saddington explained: “Everybody knows the story of Oz so we thought we’d take a risk and bring it to life in our own unique way using techniques from across the world of theatre.

“These techniques include masks and some unusual choreography.

“We have taken the approach of an ensemble theatre group who all take on many and varied roles in the performance including the roles of objects, places and even weather.”

The group has been exploring puppetry to bring the well known characters to life.

Claire added: “This has created an extra level of difficulty for the young actors but also inspired new heights of creativity and encouraged both voices and bodies to push their ability to the limit.

“The cast have realised during this unusual process that not one member of the group has a ‘minor’ role.

“Not one cast member is less important than anyone else—there are no ‘starlets’ here. They have all supported each other.”

The Wizard of Oz will be performed on April 26, 27 and 28 at the Wesley Centre, Blyth Road, Maltby, at 7.15pm.
