Calling all gardeners: Is your prized plot Rotherham's best?

LAST year’s Rotherham in Bloom winner told how gardening helps her health as the 2022 contest was launched by the council.

The annual competition — now open to all, not just RMBC tenants — also has categories including best pots; planters and hanging baskets; vegetable patch; and young gardener.

June Smith, of Dinnington, took the title last year.

She said: “When I moved home into my home the garden was very lacklustre with only small a lawn to the front and back.

“In the two years that I’ve lived here I’ve transformed my little plot into a haven to sit in and enjoy.

“It’s hard work but getting out in the fresh air has helped my health and wellbeing.

“Seeing my neighbours stop to appreciate and admire my garden makes it all worthwhile.”

Each category has two winners — with £100 of gardening vouchers for the best council and non-council resident’s efforts. Two runners up in each category receive £50 vouchers.

Cllr Amy Brookes, cabinet member for housing, said: “I very much look forward to the garden competition each year.

“I’m so pleased we’ve included a sustainable element to one of our categories this year, and I can’t wait to see what initiatives our residents have adopted to make their gardens even greener.”

Visit www.rotherham.gov.uk/gardencompetition to enter by August 7. Winners will be announced at the end of August.
