Black is the colour for designer Jonathan

A YOUNG designer is stitching his way to success with a new clothing collection based on a simple theme—black is best.

Jonathan Jepson, a fashion student from Rotherham, dreamed up his black-based

Stolen by the Shadowman catwalk collection after drawing on his childhood memories of being afraid of shadows in the night.

Now the 22-year-old has taken his first steps along the runaway to fashion fame after his collection was shown off at London’s Graduate Fashion Week.

Jonathan used a selection of furs, leathers and crystals to give a “dark but modern” look to the collection.

“My collection is based on the concept of fear within childhood memories, in particular a memory I had of being afraid of the night,” he said.

“My work is androgynous and could be seen as unisex, although I choose to style it as menswear.

“Using different textures and shades along with furs, crystals and leathers, I bring my garments to life using layers of matt and shine to accent the pieces.

“I also enjoy using challenging fabrics, and for my final collection I have experimented with fabrics that are normally used for wall coverings.”

Jonathan, who aspires to be a menswear editorial stylist for a magazine, was given the chance to showcase his collection at the London event by a selection panel which gathered to pick promising students whose designs will be on the catwalk.

Della Swain, fashion design course leader at Leicester’s De Montfort University, where Jonathan is a student, said: “The students have been working extremely hard to finalise their collections for Graduate Fashion Week.

“This year there is an eclectic mix of collections and we are very proud to be presenting 17 of our students’ work on the catwalk.

“They have all done extremely well to be picked for such a prestigious national event, giving them a fantastic opportunity to showcase their individual talents to top industry names.”
