Band takes brass to bus station

PERFORMANCE had no bounds for members of a brass band when they joined a unique public art project.

Maltby Miners Welfare Band worked with multi-disciplinary artist Mark Fell his latest work, titled Interchange.

The three-hour piece was performed on Sheffield’s Pond Street bus station as part of the city’s No Bounds Festival.

Players were distributed around the station, playing to both a bemused public waiting for buses and an appreciative festival audience.

The band’s contribution was hailed by Guardian reviewer Daniel Dylan Wray, who gave it five stars, for its “quiet melancholy and a profound emotional resonance”.

Band member Christine Sandham said: “This has been one of the most exciting and challenging projects we have worked on and has shown that whilst brass has a rich heritage it also has a future.”
