Arty salute to railway heritage

STUDENTS made tracks to a former railway cutting to help salute its heritage with a new work of art.

Pupils from Dearne Valley schools worked with artist Lydia Caprani to create a mural at the Goldthorpe Railway Cutting.

The work nods to the site’s former use by depicting a train travelling through the countryside.

Children from Astrea Academy Dearne, the Robert Ogden School, Gooseacre Academy, Highgate Academy and Sacred Heart Primary School all took part.

The mural was officially unveiled on Wednesday by the Mayor of Barnsley,  Cllr Caroline Makinson, and can be seen throughout the summer when the site — which was a notorious fly-tipping spot before a major clean-up operation — is open to visitors.
