TENNIS fans who found fault with Rotherham Council have been served up new facilities.

The year-long project to replace Clifton Park’s courts came to a close on Saturday when the new facilities, including three courts and a basketball court, were officially opened.

The council came under fire last year after it shut the long-standing courts and began resurfacing them before the new courts were in place.

But Cllr Sarah Allen, the council’s cabinet member for cleaner, greener communities, said she was glad to be leading the opening, to which Moorgate Tennis Club and the Rotherham Hawks basketball club were invited.

“Clifton Park is a brilliant asset to our town and these new sports facilities are a welcome addition to what the park already has to offer,” she said.

“The new courts will increase opportunities for people to play more sport and in a safe environment.”

The new courts have been built on the site of one of the old bowling greens, which had not been used for several years.
