ROTHERHAM United today made their first summer signing as international defender Shane Ferguson moved to AESSEAL New York Stadium after leaving Millwall.

The experienced left-sided player, who had been with the Championship Lions for the last six seasons, has played in the Premier League with Newcastle United and has 47 Northern Ireland caps.

He will solve a problem on the left flank where the Millers have been short of depth for the last two seasons.

“I wanted some strength down the left side and Shane, with his ability to play in three different positions — left-back, left wing-back, left wing — is a perfect addition," said manager Paul Warne.

"I had a Zoom call with him and really took to him. I like the fact that he’s played internationally and played in big games,” said Warne. “He did really well at Millwall.

“We lost Trevor Clarke — his career was going to go somewhere else — so we needed a replacement."

Ferguson, who turned 30 earlier this month, has signed a two-year contract and there is an option to extend it by a further 12 months.

Warne, whose League One team are in pre-season action at League Two Rochdale tonight, is hoping this will be a big recruitment week.

Bids are in for a defender and a utility player, with decisions expected by the weekend, and the boss is also trying to broker a loan move for a young midfielder with a Premier League club.

The Ferguson deal was wrapped up last week but the Millers delayed the announcement until they had returned from their Budapest boot camp and could make the final medical checks.
