TEENAGER Josh Chapman is the trialist goalkeeper bidding to earn a Rotherham United contract for next season.

The Millers, who have Viktor Johansson and Josh Vickers competing for the first-team berth, want to add a third shot-stopper to their squad before the League One campaign kicks off early next month.

Chapman, aged 19, has been released by Sheffield United and has done his prospects no harm in the early days of pre-season at Roundwood as he seeks to impress keeper coach Andy Warrington.

“It’s been really good,” manager Paul Ware said. “Andy really likes him. He says he’s trained really well. For what it’s worth, Josh is a nice, polite kid, which always works well here.

“In the goalkeeping group, personality is absolutely key because the keepers spend virtually more time together than they do with their partners.”

Rotherham are in the market for a development keeper and say any new signing won’t be challenging Johansson and Vickers for a place in the senior side.

“Josh has fitted in really well and we’ll have a look at him in a couple of practice games soon and go from there,” Warne said.

Chapman is unlikely to feature in Saturday’s friendly against Parkgate FC as the Millers plan to give a half each to Johansson and Vickers.

Meanwhile, striker Jamie Proctor, who was released by Rotherham at the end of last season, has joined League Two Port Vale on a year-long deal.
