A DEARNE Valley man who sexually abused two boys and a girl was snared by police after they arrested him for unrelated matters and examined a camcorder he owned.

Stephen Riley (42), of Denaby Main, appeared at Sheffield Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday), when he pleaded guilty to sexually abusing three children on the day his trial was due to begin.

Riley (pictured) admitted raping a child aged under 13, two counts of inciting a boy under 13 to engage in sexual activity and one count of inciting a girl under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity.

He also pleaded guilty to four counts of possession of indecent images, one count of engaging in sexual activity in front of a child and possession of cannabis.

The offences occurred in August 2016.

Police launched an investigation in August last year when Riley was arrested for unrelated matters which resulted in a number of his electronic devices being seized, including a camcorder.

The camera was found to have indecent images of children on, some of which were of the most extreme level.

Det Con Scott Barley said: “After indecent images and videos were found on the camcorder, an investigation was launched to try and identify the children and locations featured on the images.

“A number of the children were identified and their families spoken to, which led to subsequent offences being disclosed, including the rape of a young child and numerous other sexual offences committed against the same children.

“Despite the extensive evidence gathered against him, Riley continued to deny his guilt and feign innocence about the material found on the devices, until he entered guilty pleas to all counts against him on Tuesday when he was due to stand trial.

“Riley preyed on young children for his own selfish, sexual gratification.

“I’m relieved that Riley’s victims were not forced to recount their ordeals in court during a trial and I hope that knowing he is facing significant time behind bars for theses despicable crimes, can help both them and their families to continue moving with their lives.”

Riley has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced at the same court on June 22.
